Den Norske Klub Fireside Chat
March 12 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Den Norske Klub invites you to a Fireside Chat with the Norwegian Defence Attaché to the United Kingdom, Colonel John Andreas Olsen, Thursday 12th March 2020.
Colonel Olsen will give a talk on Norwegian defence and security policy with emphasis on the northern region and the relationship with Russia.
Defence and Security in the North: Norwegian Perspectives: The Arctic continues to be a region characterised by peace, stability, cooperation, well-functioning multilateral institutions and respect for international law. The strategic goal of Norway’s Arctic policy is to make sure this general positive state of affairs continues in the future. Common interests within fisheries, maritime transport, search and rescue, scientific research, the extraction of oil, natural gas and minerals and tourism, are important drivers for a predictable and long-term policy of cooperation among the Arctic states.
Olsen will draw on two books that he has recently edited, both published at RUSI. The first – NATO and the North Atlantic: Revitalising Collective Defence (2017) – focused on the renewed importance of the transatlantic bond from US, UK and Norwegian perspectives. The second – Security in Northern Europe: Deterrence, Defence and Dialogue (2018) – took a broader view, analysing challenges confronting the twelve Northern Group countries, the US and Canada. Both books will be distributed at the seminar free of charge.
